Garbage disposals fail in a small number of predictable ways: the unit hums but won't turn because something is jammed in the grinding chamber, it does nothing at all because the internal overload has tripped or the motor is finished, or it leaks — from the sink flange above, from the dishwasher inlet, or from the body of the unit itself.

A jam or a tripped overload is a quick fix. A leak from the housing is not — once the shell is corroded through, the unit is done, and continuing to run it just puts water into the cabinet base. We'll tell you which of the two you have within a few minutes of looking at it.

On a replacement we install the new unit with a fresh sink flange and plumber's putty seal, re-plumb the drain arm and trap to the correct slope, connect the dishwasher inlet with the knockout properly removed, and run the unit under water to confirm there's no weep anywhere in the assembly. If your kitchen has never had a disposal, we can add one where the drain configuration and electrical supply allow.
